DACE –Model for description system of the Historical Archives of the European Capitals

 European Summit
Model for a System of Description of the historical Archives
of the European Capital towns
(D.A.C.E)
Rome, March 24-27, 2000

The historical process of each European capital has left an important trace in the documentation conserved in the archives of the individual town. The project realised and approved, during the Summit, a common model for the description of the historical-documentary material of the historical archives in the European capital towns.
The “D.A.C.E. model” will allow the setting up of an information system that links all the information in each capital town and the subsequent creation of a virtual guide to the historical documentation conserved in the archives of capital towns.

 Objectives
- to permit the transfer of knowledge and the exchange of ideas and experiences among the operators which work in the Historic Municipal Archives of the European capitals.
- to accept/adopt a common standard for the description of the documentary materials held in the archives.
- to form a network among the participants of the project, and in a near future facilitate the development and the presentation of common projects.

Result and end products
- The definition of a common standard was developped during the international Summit by representatives from the Archives in each of the 15 countries from the European Union. Special attention was paid to the problems involved in keeping historical archives in European cities.
- Development of a tool that allows access to information from the wealth of documents held in the Archives of each of the capital cities.
