He subsequently attended decorative arts courses at the Andrea Fantoni School of Art for three years and, in 1954, joined the workshop of the Taragni brothers, with whom he collaborated on important projects.

In 1955, he began working in Mauro Pellicioli’s workshop in the upper town of Bergamo. From the following year onwards, he accompanied Pellicioli to Venice and other cities where the master was called upon to work. At the time, Pellicioli was regarded as the leading figure in the field of restoration. In 1963, after completing his military service, Benigni spent several months in the capital, where he came into contact with restorers from Bergamo who had been working at the Central Institute for Restoration (Istituto Centrale del Restauro) since 1939, following Mauro Pellicioli’s appointment as chief restorer. This brought him closer to the scientific approach to restoration advocated by the Institute. He subsequently worked on the restoration of the Gallery of Hercules in the Palace of the Princes of Monaco in Monte Carlo. Upon returning to Bergamo, he opened his own restoration studio at 80 Via Pignolo. On 17 June 1963, he was registered with the Bergamo Chamber of Commerce as a paintings restorer.

In 1970, he moved to a larger studio on Viale Vittorio Emanuele and increasingly specialised in the restoration of paintings.
He began receiving numerous commissions from both public and private bodies in Bergamo and many other cities throughout Lombardy.
In the same year, he was officially appointed to oversee the conservation of the Accademia Carrara Art Gallery. In 1977, he was appointed president of the newly established Consorzio Artigiani Restauratori (Consortium of Artisan Restorers), which operated until 1986, working both for the Accademia Carrara in Bergamo, where it was based, and for other public institutions, including the Pinacoteca di Brera. Within the Consortium, he worked alongside the restorers Minerva Tramonti, Ezio Bartoli and Gian Andrea Maggi. He subsequently continued his collaboration with the art gallery in its new laboratory, established within the Accademia Carrara, together with Delfina Fagnani Sesti and Alberto Sangalli, while maintaining contacts with private collectors to provide consultancy, expert assessments and restoration services for works of art.
Among his most significant restoration projects were the work on Bergognone’s polyptych in the Church of Santo Spirito and the restoration of the painting by Lorenzo Lotto held in the parish church of Serina. The last interventions documented in his archive date back to 2006.
In 2010, he was appointed president of the Associazione Restauratori Bergamaschi (Association of Restorers of Bergamo). In the following years, he continued to provide consultancy services in the field of painting restoration for various clients until his death on 29 January 2026, at the age of 87.

RES.I Database – Restorer record Antonio Benigni

Date range of the archive: 1959–2006

Type and date of acquisition: Donation – 4 September 2006

Access:
The fonds is subject to a legal restriction on account of its particularly significant historical interest.
