International Study Conference “Mauro Pellicioli and the culture of restoration in the twentieth century” (Venice, November 14-15, 2018)

In the framework of history of restoration, fundamental point for a deeper knowledge of problems related to Conservation-Restoration of Cultural Heritage and History of Art, the Associazione Giovanni Secco Suardo together with the Fondazione Accademia Carrara, the Gallerie dell’Accademia of Venice, the Istituto Centrale per il Restauro, the Soprintendenza Archeologia, Belle Arti e Paesaggio of Venice and the Polo Museale Veneto, promoted and organized an International Conference dedicated to the Italian restorer Mauro Pellicioli.

The Conference is connected to the project Archivio Storico Nazionale e Banca Dati dei Restauratori Italiani – ASRI, (National Historical Archive of Italian Restorers), which was launched in 1995 during the conference dedicated to Giovanni Secco Suardo, aims to increasing and enhance the knowledge on history of conservation-restoration through the safeguard of the Italian conservator-restorers’ private archives and through studies, researches and cataloguing in the ASRI database.

The Conference was an interdisciplinary moment of debate on the conservation-restoration history in Italy and in European countries, starting from Mauro Pellicioli, whose work on the most important Italian works of art ranged from public institutions to private customers.

This Conference it was a precious opportunity to match different themes: the history of conservation-restoration (as technical and philological study), the conservation-restoration methodology and the historical analysis of social and cultural processes. Different paths so deeply interrelated that need increasing integration.

In fact, it should be considered that, despite the presence of multiple reports on individual interventions or reconstructions of relationships with institutions and personalities from the world of art and restoration, an overall interpretation of the figure of Mauro Pellicioli is still lacking. The critical analysis of his biography and the results of his activity on works of art is completely fragmentary and largely still unpublished. On the other hand, there is a large amount of largely unpublished documentary material, represented by his personal archive, conserved at the Associazione Giovanni Secco Suardo.
