DECORUM – Inventory of painted decoration of domestic architecture in Europe (Inventaire du décor peint de l’architecture domestique en Europe) European project 2012-2014

The painted decoration domestic architecture located in the castles, mansions or palaces represent a cultural patrimony mostly unknown to the public, which has not previously been the subject of any inventory on a national scale and even less on a European scale.

A body of knowledge, documentary sources, and historical techniques would be essential for decorators and restorers involved on these works but have neither documentation nor regulations that establish the respective fields of action: this gap is therefore a risk to their conservation.

The project DECORUM is therefore proposed to develop a methodology to inventory domestic decorations painted through an exchange of work done in partner countries. The creation of this inventory has allowed to develop a large database.
The database, accessible to professionals through a specific website, offers the opportunity to compare styles and techniques as well as their diffusion in Europe.
