Two years of work in Lombardy 2008-2009

Spreading culture through the historical archives was the goal within which the project is framed, focusing on the archives scattered throughout the Lombardy region that preserve information on restorers and their restoration interventions.

In order to design a correct conservation and restoration intervention on a work it is necessary to know the methodologies and methods implemented by those who, in the past, have materially intervened on the work. It is therefore essential to reconstruct the history of restorers and their interventions through an in-depth investigation both of the archives of museums and administrations and of the private papers of the restorers themselves, generating new useful and precious knowledge both for the operators of the sector and for the public of museums and for art lovers.

The project wanted to combine, alongside an investigation activity in some Lombard archives, also the popular aspect, through a pilot experience that brought to light and disseminated the archival materials on the restoration of some works of art, preserved at the museums participating in the initiative and on the restorers who have carried out them, all suitably reworked.

This experience has developed through various information channels, such as publications on the work carried out, public presentations of the project, dedicated areas on institutional websites, information materials distributed in museums and information panels.
